Stakes Winner Absolutely Zero Returns For O’Neill In The $150,000 Evening Jewel Stakes
STAKES WINNER ABSOLUTELY ZERO RETURNS FOR O’NEILL IN THE $150,000 EVENING JEWEL STAKES FOR CALIFORNIA BREDS
RACE IS PART OF LUCRATIVE CTBA-SPONSORED GOLDEN STATE SERIES
ARCADA, CA (April 5, 2023)—Stakes winner Absolutely Zero, off since the Grade II Sorrento at Del Mar Aug. 13, and unbeaten stablemate Ceiling Crusher give trainer Doug O’Neill a strong hand for Saturday’s $150,000 Evening Jewel Stakes for statebred 3-year-old fillies.
Absolutely Zero won her debut last May going 4 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita and returned a month later to knock off males in the Fasig-Tipton Futurity at five furlongs. Stepping up for the GII Sorrento going six furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 13, the Nyquist homebred for Reddam Racing stalked the pace before fading in the stretch to finish last of six.
Absolutely Zero has worked eight times at Santa Anita for her comeback. She will break from the rail under regular rider Mario Gutierrez.
Ceiling Crusher won her debut last June at Santa Anita when making her only start of the year. The Mr. Big filly resurfaced Jan. 29 at Santa Anita and took down a first-level allowance for statebreds going six furlongs on dirt. The effort earned a field-high 80 Beyer Speed Figure.
Ceiling Crusher is owned by Wonderland Racing Stables, Todd Cady, Tim Kasparoff and Ty Leatherman. Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez has ridden Ceiling Crusher in both previous starts and again has the call on Saturday.
Tom’s Regret won last year’s Kentucky Juvenile Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard May 5 at Churchill Downs and returned to finish second in the Fasig-Tipton Debutante at Santa Anita June 18. Both those efforts came for trainer Jorge Periban.
Sent to the sidelines the remainder of the year, Tom’s Regret returned March 12 for new trainer Steve Miyadi in a statebred allowance going 5 ½ furlongs at Golden Gate. In her comeback, she set the pace over Golden Gate’s synthetic main track before tiring late to be third by 2 ¼ lengths.
By Tom’s Tribute, Tom’s Regret is owned by Cinema Thoroughbreds, Michelle K. Beckerle, Saul Carrillo, Victor M. Flores, Burton Johnson and Eugene Zondio. She will be ridden for the first time by Abel Cedillo.
