FRIDAY CARRYOVERS: $47K IN PICK 6, $9K IN SUPER HI 5

Both the $2 Pick Six and $1 Super Hi 5 have carryovers heading into Friday’s eight-race card at Santa Anita.

In the Pick Six, the pool will start with $47,835 after there were no perfect tickets with 6-of-6 winners on Monday’s program. The Super Hi 5, which is only offered on the final race of the day, has a carryover of $9,719.

With first post at 1 p.m. PT Friday, the Pick Six kicks off at approximately 2 p.m. with the third card on the card, a starter/optional claimer for 2-year-olds going six furlongs on dirt. The Super Hi 5 carryover will be up for grabs in the eighth and final race at approximately 4:30 p.m. The eighth race is a $30,000 maiden-claimer for fillies and mares at one mile on turf. A full field of nine is signed on with four also eligibles.

In Monday’s Pick Six, the carryover was helped triggered by longshot winners Toulouse Detrac ($28.80) in the sixth race and We Can ($64) in the ninth and final race. Toulouse Detrac was ridden by Kazushi Kimura for trainer George Papaprodromou and We Can scored under Tyler Baze for Northern California-based trainer Monty Meier.

The consolation payout Monday for tickets with 5-of-6 winners was $2,227.80.

The winners in Monday’s Pick 6 sequence starting with the fourth race were #4 Discrepancy ($4.40). #11 Captain Choochies ($8.80), #7 Toulouse Detrac ($28.80), #4 Queen of the Mud ($5), #5 Dr Ruben M ($16.80) and #3 We Can ($64).

WORKS: NOONI BACK ON TAB AFTER OAK LEAF RUNNER-UP

Nooni, runner-up in the GII Oak Leaf Stakes Oct. 5, returned to the work tab Thursday and promptly fired a bullet for trainer Bob Baffert. Also registering a bullet work was promising debut winner Eagles Flight, a half brother to undefeated 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline.

Nooni worked five furlongs on the main track in 59.60 seconds. From the first crop of Florida-based stallion Win Win Win, Nooni set the pace in the Oak Leaf before being overhauled in the stretch by stablemate Non Compliant and finishing 2 ¼ lengths adrift. Nooni was 8 ¼ lengths clear of third-place finisher Tenma, the GI Del Mar Debutante winner. A $1.8 million auction purchase this year by Zedan Racing Stables, Nooni is a candidate to run in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

Eagles Flight, trained by John Sadler, worked three furlongs in 35.0 seconds. It was his second drill in the last seven days after going four months without a work. By Curlin, Eagles Flight rolled to a 2 ¾-length win in her unveiling going six furlongs May 27 at Santa Anita. She is owned by Hronis Racing, breeder Summer Wind Equine and William S. Farish.

On Wednesday, Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Senor Buscador worked for the first time since finishing fifth in the GI California Crown Sept. 28 at Santa Anita. Trained by Todd Fincher, Senor Buscador worked five furlongs in 1:00.0. It was the fastest of 10 works at the distance.

Also on Wednesday, Grade I winner Tamara continued on the comeback trail with a five-furlong work in 1:01.20 for trainer Richard Mandella. By Bolt d’Oro out of Hall of Famer Beholder, Tamara hasn’t started since finishing off the board as the favorite in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Prior to the Breeders’ Cup, Tamara won her debut at Del Mar and then scored in the GI Del Mar Debutante.

BUCHDAHL TO BE HONORED ON 50th ANNIVERSARY OF 1st RACE CALL

The fourth race Friday is named in honor of Alan Buchdahl, who 50 years ago this week called his first-ever professional race at Santa Anita.

Buchdahl was just 18 years old when he took the microphone during the Oak Tree Meet on Oct. 16, 1974. As Buchdahl recalls, it was the day’s ninth race and the winner was Osage River with jockey Alvaro Pineda aboard. Osage River was trained by Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel for owner Martin Ritt.

Buchdahl said he was recently invited to come out and celebrate the milestone by Santa Anita’s current track announcer, Frank Mirahmadi.

“This was something Frank kindly put in motion,” Buchdahl said. “It’s quite an honor and was unexpected. It’s very nice of both Frank and Santa Anita.”

In the ensuing five decades, Buchdahl has continued to serve as a fill-in announcer at Santa Anita. In June, when Mirahmadi was in New York calling the Belmont Stakes, Buchdahl served as Santa Anita’s track announcer for three days. “Alan has always been a strong supporter of Santa Anita’s over the past half-century, picking up announcing days when needed, sometimes at the last minute,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President & Executive Producer Amy Zimmerman. “What is less known, is that he is also a strong supporter of racing charities, often donating his entire fill-in work check to CARMA and the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund.”

RANCHO SAN MIGUEL TO HOST OPEN HOUSE AND STALLION SHOW

Rancho San Miguel, which stands some of California’s top stallions, will host an open house and stallion show on Saturday, Nov. 16. Current and prospective Thoroughbred owners and breeders are invited to participate in the free program, which will be hosted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Rancho San Miguel this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary as one of California’s top breeding centers. The 250-acre farm is located in the city of San Miguel in San Luis Obispo County.

“We’re hoping to give regional mare owners a helpful head start on making their all-important breeding decisions for 2025,” Rancho San Miguel owner Tom Clark said. “As part of that effort, we’re also proud to introduce two new stellar stallion choices to our line-up for breeders.”

The new stallions set to stand the upcoming breeding season are multiple graded stakes winner Brickyard Ride, by leading California sire Clubhouse Ride, and black-type runner The Street Fighter, by Street Boss. Both will be available for inspection during the Open House.

Also set to parade as part of the stallion show are veteran Rancho San Miguel studs Danzing Candy, Editorial, Northern Causeway, Richard’s Kid, Sir Prancealot, Surf Cat and the popular Mo Forza, who in both 2023 and 2024 led all California-based stallions by number of mares bred.

Open House attendees will be treated to a catered lunch and will also be entered in a raffle for a stallion season. Additionally, the event will provide opportunities for participants to view several yearlings and horses of mixed age currently available for private purchase. It also promises to be a great networking event for Thoroughbred owners and breeders.

FINISH LINES: The feature race Saturday, the $80,000 Lure Stakes at one mile on turf, goes as the eighth race at approximately 4:30 p.m. A competitive field of nine is entered led by graded winners Exaulted for trainer Peter Eurton and Seal Team , the lukewarm 7-2 program favorite who returns from an 11 ½-month layoff for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella…Jockey Kazushi Kimura booted home three winners on Monday’s nine-race card. Kimura scored in the second aboard favorite Rapida ($3.80) for trainer Ryan Hanson, the third race on Sorrento Sky ($17.20) for trainer Phil D’Amato and the sixth on longshot Toulouse Detrac ($28.80) for trainer George Papaprodromou…Northern California-based trainer Monty Meier came south from Pleasanton Monday with 3-year-old gelding We Can ($64) and sprung a 31-1 upset in the ninth and final race at Santa Anita, a first-level statebred allowance at one mile on turf. Jockey Tyler Baze , who has had a resurgence at the Santa Anita Autumn Meet, was aboard. It was Baze’s seventh win from 41 mounts (17 percent) at the stand…Trainer George Papaprodromou had two more wins Monday to move into first place in the trainer’s standings. Papaprodromou, who is 11-for-29 (38 percent) won the fifth race with Captain Choochies ($8.80) and the sixth with Toulouse Detrac ($28.80)…First post Friday is 1 p.m. for an eight-race card.
