PICK 6 CARRYOVER OF $63K FOR SUNDAY’S 8-RACE CARD There is a Pick Six carryover of $63,126 for Sunday’s eight-race card. The total pool is estimated to approach $500,000.
On Saturday, the carryover was triggered with one race remaining when Coach Cronin won the eighth for trainer Kelly Bainum and paid $36.60 with Armando Ayuso in the irons. Favorites went 0-for-9 Saturday.
The winning horses in Saturday’s Pick Six starting with the fourth race were #4 Soul of Midnight ($13.00), #8 Siennois ($7.20), #2 Happy Jack ($7.80), #5 Circle of Trust ($8.20), #4 Coach Cronin ($36.60) and #11 Real Fire ($40.20).
The consolation payout Saturday for tickets with 5-of-6 winners was $2,705.40.
Sunday’s $1 Pick Six starts with the third race at 2:07 p.m. PT. The sequence averages 7.7 starters per race before scratches.
Based on the morning line, the shortest-priced favorite is likely to come in the opening leg, a one -mile allowance/optional claimer on dirt. Lisa’s Nonno, trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by Antonio Fresu, is installed at 9-5 in a six-horse field.
The Desert Stormer Stakes going six furlongs on dirt, which goes as the seventh, looks to have two potential standouts. South American import Ricci, a multiple Group I winner in her native Chile, is listed as the 2-1 favorite for her U.S. unveiling. Trained by Bob Baffert, Richi will have Juan Hernandez in the irons.
The 5-2 second-choice in the Desert Stormer for fillies and mares is Anywho for trainer John Sadler. Anywho wheels back two weeks after shipping to Churchill Downs and airing by eight lengths on a sloppy track in a first-level allowance going six furlongs. She will be ridden by Antonio Fresu for the first time.
WORK TAB: ARABIAN KNIGHT, UNDEFEATED MEDORO DRILL Grade I winner Arabian Knight and undefeated turf filly Medoro were among 223 horses to have timed workouts Sunday at Santa Anita.
Arabian Knight continued to gear up for trainer Bob Baffert with a six-furlong work in 1:13.00. Th 4-year-old Uncle Mo colt hasn’t started since finishing fourth in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. This was his first work beyond five furlongs this year.
Medoro, a perfect 4-for-4 with three stakes wins for trainer Peter Eurton, worked four furlongs in 48.80 seconds. It was the 3-year-old Honor Code filly’s first work since winning the GIII Providencia going 1 1/8 miles on turf April 20 at Santa Anita.
Owned by C R K Stable, Medoro’s other stakes wins came in the China Doll March 10 and Blue Norther Dec. 29, both at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.
Trainer Doug O’Neill’s workers included Raging Torrent and multiple graded stakes winner Anarchist. Raging Torrent, a smashing allowance winner May 4 on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs, worked five furlongs in 1:00.40.
Anarchist hasn’t started since winning the GII Pat O’Brien at Del Mar last August. The 5-year-old Distorted Humor horse worked four furlongs in 49.60 seconds. It was his fourth work since April 28.
GII SUMMERTIME OAKS, AFFIRMED FOR 3-YEAR-OLDS ON TAP NEXT WEEK Two stakes are scheduled for next weekend at Santa Anita, both for 3-year-olds. The GII Summertime Oaks for fillies at 1 1/16 miles on dirt is Saturday with the Affirmed Stakes, also at 1 1/16 miles on the main track, set to go on Sunday.
Expected to headline the Summertime Oaks is Nothing Like You for trainer Bob Baffert. Nothing Like You uncorked a career-best effort last out when romping by 7 ½ lengths in GII Santa Anita Oaks April 6. The Malibu Moon filly, who also won the GII Starlet at Los Alamitos in December, is 8: 4-1-0 with $423,160 in earnings.
Nothing Like You’s chief rival is likely to be Jane Austen, who is a perfect 2-for-2 in her young career. Trained by Mark Glatt, Jane Austen won her debut going seven furlongs April 21 at Santa Anita and came right back to win in an entry-level allowance when stretched to a mile May 17.
By Tapit, Jane Austen was purchased for $750,000 by owner Muir Hut Stables at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.
Nominees to the Affirmed include Grade II-placed Mc Vay for trainer John Shirreffs, sharp debut winner Parenting for Baffert, Grade III-placed Scatify for trainer John Sadler.
McVay tested the Triple Crown trail earlier this year while still a maiden. The Constitution colt was fourth in the GIII Robert B. Lewis, third in the GII San Felipe and seventh in the GI Santa Anita Derby.
Dropped back in with maidens going a mile last out on May 18 at Santa Anita, Mc Vay romped by seven lengths while earning a career-best 95 Beyer Speed Figure.
Parenting debuted going 5 ½ furlongs April 26 at Santa Anita and scored by 2 ¾ lengths after attending the pace. By Triple Crown winner Justify, Parenting was a $750,000 auction buy last year by owner Gandharvi LLC.
On Sunday, Parenting worked a bullet when going six furlongs in 1:11.00.
Scatify, who was third in the Lewis, most recently tried turf in a first-level allowance going six furlongs. He rallied on the inside to finish second by just a half-length. Also by Justify, he was a $120,000 auction buy last year by owner West Point Thoroughbreds.
The Summertime Oaks field will be set on Wednesday. The draw for the Affirmed is Thursday.
