WORKS: BREEDERS’ CUP PRE-ENTRANTS DOT THE TAB
A bevy of horses pre-entered in next week’s Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar worked Saturday at Santa Anita. Out in force were horses trained by Bob Baffert and Phil D’Amato, who combined pre-entered 18 horses to the 41st Breeders’ Cup.
D’Amato worked all eight of his Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants. One Magic Philly (Filly & Mare Sprint), winner of the GIII Chillingworth last out, and Vodka With a Twist (Juvenile Fillies), second in the GI Del Mar Debutante, worked in company. One Magic Philly was clocked in 1:00.60 and Vodka With a Twist went in 1:00.80. Hang the Moon (Filly & Mare Turf), upset winner of the GII Rodeo Drive, worked five furlongs in 1:00.40. Che Evasora (Distaff), most recently last in the GII Zenyatta at Santa Anita, went five furlongs in 1:00.0. Thought Process (Juvenile Fillies Turf), winner of the GIII Surfer Girl, went five furlongs in 1:00.40.
As for D’Amato’s colts and geldings, Gold Phoenix (Turf), fifth in the GII John Henry, went five furlongs in 1:00.40. Iron Man Cal (Juvenile Turf), winner of the GIII Zuma Beach, went five furlongs in 1:00.20. Motorious (Turf Sprint), winner of the GIII Green Flash at Del Mar last out, went four furlongs in 48.80 seconds.
Baffert worked four of his 10 pre-entrants. Citizen Bull (Juvenile), winner of the GI American Pharoah, earned a bullet when going five furlongs in 58.80 seconds. Gaming (Juvenile), winner of the GI Del Mar Futurity, went five furlongs in 1:00.20. Non Compliant (Juvenile Fillies), winner of the GII Oak Leaf, went five furlongs in 1:00.20. Muth (Dirt Mile), last in the GI California Crown last out, went five furlongs in 59.0 seconds.
Working for trainer John Sadler were Kirstenbosch (Filly & Mare Sprint) and Supa Speed (Juvenile Fillies Turf). Kirstenbosch, third in the Chillingworth off an eight-month layoff, went five furlongs in 1:01.20. Supa Speed, second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, went five furlongs in 1:02.80.
Trainer Michael McCarthy worked There Goes Harvard (Turf) and Sunset Glory (Filly & Mare Turf). There Goes Harvard, second in the John Henry, went four furlongs in 48.60 seconds. Sunset Glory, fifth in the Rodeo Drive, went five furlongs in 1:01.80.
Johannes (Mile), winner of the GII City of Hope Mile, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 for trainer Tim Yakteen. Anisette (Filly & Mare Turf), worked four furlongs in 48.20 for trainer Leonard Powell. Sugar Fish (Distaff), who won the Zenyatta, went five furlongs in 59.80 seconds for trainer Jeff Mullins. Dr. Venkman, pre-entered in both the Sprint and Dirt Mile with the Sprint being first preference, most recently fourth in the GI Pacific Classic, worked five furlongs in 1:00.20 for trainer Mark Glatt. Finally, El Encinal (Turf), last in the John Henry, worked four furlongs in 48.80 seconds for trainer Francisco Garcia. The post position draw for the Breeders’ Cup is Monday at 4 p.m. PT. It will be aired live on FanDuel TV.
FRIDAY’S PICK 6 POOL REACHES $1.2 MILLION, PAYS $7,119
Bolstered by a double carryover of $153,104, Friday’s Pick Six attracted $1,086,139 in new money to push the entire pool to $1,239,243.
At the end of the sequence, there were 103 tickets that had all six winners, which resulted in a payout of $7,119.80. The consolation payout for tickets with 5-of-6 winners was $109.80.
There were three winning favorites in Friday’s Pick Six and one winner that paid double digits. The winning horses starting with the fourth race were #7 Uffda ($9.40), #3 It’s a Cinch ($6.60*), #4 Cardinal Spirit ($7.60), #4 Ima Joker ($5*), #9 Safa ($4.60*) and #9 Jai Ho ($16.60).
Also on Friday, the $1 Super High 5 on the ninth and final race started with a carryover of $27,023. Jai Ho ($16.60), the third choice in the wagering, won the race under Antonio Fresu for trainer Peter Miller. Even-money favorite Certitude was second followed by Dangerous Affair (5-2), Auditory (31-1) and Pondicherry (15-1).
The Super High 5, which also had a carryover of $27,023 returned $1,745.30 for 80 winning tickets.
On a 10-race card Saturday, which starts at 1 p.m., the Pick Six will begin with the fourth race at approximately 2:30 p.m. PT.
TRAINER’S RACE CLOSE WITH 2 DAYS LEFT IN MEET
With two days and 20 races remaining in the Santa Anita Autumn Meet, the race for leading trainer is tight. Entering Saturday’s 10-race card, only three wins separate the top four in the standings.
Phil D’Amato, a six-time leading trainer at Santa Anita, leads the way with 13 wins from 65 starters (20 percent). Tied for second with 12 wins are George Papaprodomou and Bob Baffert. Papaprodromou, who has connected at a 38 percent clip at the stand (12-for-32), has never won a Santa Anita trainer’s title.
D’Amato has 12 horses entered in eight races over the next two days. Papaprodromou has nine horses entered in seven races. Baffert, who is 12-for-35 (34 percent) at the meet, has 10 starters in six races.
In the jockey’s division, Juan Hernandez is poised to claim his seventh riding title at Santa Anita. He has 20 wins from 89 mounts (22 percent), which is five more than runner-up Umberto Rispoli (15-for-73, 21 percent). Hernandez has 14 mounts and Rispoli has 15 mounts over the next two days.
FINISH LINES: Jockey Tiago Pereira rode three winners on Friday’s nine-race card, moving him into fifth in the jockey’s standing with seven wins at the stand. Pereira scored with Tam’s Little Angel ($11.40) in the opener, The Shillelagh ($15.20) in the third race and Safa ($4.60) in the eighth race…Saturday’s feature is the Grade II, $200,000 Twilight Derby, which goes as the seventh race at approximately 4 p.m. PT. In a field of seven, Stay Hot with Antonio Fresu up is the 3-1 program favorite for trainer Peter Eurton…Eurton also trains the program favorite Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 Autumn Miss , which is for 3-year-old fillies at one mile on turf. Medoro, a three-time stakes winner with Fresu up, is installed at 8-5 on the morning line…On closing day Sunday, there will be mandatory payouts in all pools. There are 10 races set with first post at 1 p.m… Santa Anita Hispanic Ambassador George Ortuzar will be host Tom Quigley’s handicapping guest Sunday on the Santa Anita simulcast feed starting at 11:50 a.m.
