WORKS: BREEDERS’ CUP PROSPECTS LEAD TAB

With the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar now just two weeks out, a slew of prospects worked Saturday at Santa Anita including five for trainer Phil D’Amato.

D’Amato’s quintet on the tab included Iron Man Cal (Juvenile Turf), Thought Process (Juvenile Fillies Turf) and Che Evasora (Distaff). Following the works, D’Amato confirmed all three would be pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup. He remains undecided on if his other two workers, One Magic Philly (Filly & Mare Sprint) and Vodka With a Twist (Juvenile Fillies), will go on to the Breeders’ Cup.

One Magic Philly, winner of the GIII Chillingworth Stakes Oct. 5 at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs in 49.60 seconds. The 3-year-old Good Magic filly is a homebred for John Gallegos. Vodka With a Twist, second in the GI Del Mar Debutante last out on Oct. 7, worked six furlongs in 1:15.20. The Thousand Words filly is owned by Medallion Racing, Omar Aldabbagh and William Strauss.

“I still need to discuss it with the owners,” D’Amato said of the Breeders’ Cup plans for One Magic Philly and Vodka With a Twist.

Iron Man Cal, who won the GIII Zuma Beach via disqualification Oct. 6 at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds. Thought Process, winner of both the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and GIII Surfer Girl Oct. 6 at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs in 49.80 seconds.

Rounding out D’Amato’s workers was Che Evasora, who went six furlongs in 1:15.80. Che Evasora, an import from Argentina, finished last in the GII Zenyatta when making her U.S. debut Sept. 29 at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old mare by Greenspring owns an automatic berth into the Distaff earned when winning a 1 ¼-mile Group I in Argentina in May.

Working six furlongs on the synthetic training track for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella was Goliad, who completed the move in a sharp 1:11.60. Goliad is a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Last month when shipping to Kentucky Downs, Goliad won two races in a span of seven days including the GIII Mint Millions Stakes on Sept. 7.

Trainer John Sadler worked a pair of Breeders’ Cup prospects, Kirstenbosch and Supa Speed. Kirstenbosch, a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, worked four furlongs in 48.40 seconds. Fifth in last year’s Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita, Kirstenbosch most recently returned from an eight-month layoff and finished third in the Chillingworth.

Supa Speed, targeting the Juvenile Fillies Turf, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40. The Louisiana-bred daughter of Justify most recently was second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Sept. 7.

Working towards expected starts in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint were Raging Torrent, The Chosen Vron and Straight No Chaser. Raging Torrent, winner of the GII Pat O’Brien Aug. 24 at Del Mar, fired a bullet when going five furlongs from the gate in 59.0 seconds for trainer Doug O’Neill. The Chosen Vron, fifth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, worked four furlongs in 48.80. Trained and co-owned by Eric Kruljac, the millionaire California-bred most recently was beaten a neck by Raging Torrent in the Pat O’Brien.

Straight No Chaser, a scintillating winner of the GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship Sept. 29, worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 for trainer Dan Blacker.

Other Breeders’ Cup prospects working were Johannes (Mile, 5f 1:01.60) for trainer Tim Yakteen; Getaway Car (Juvenile, 5f 1:00.20) for trainer Bob Baffert; Anisette (Filly & Mare Turf, 5f 1:01.60) for trainer Leonard Powell; Dr. Venkam (Dirt Mile or Sprint, 5f 1:03.80) for trainer Mark Glatt; There Goes Harvard (Turf, 5f 1:01.40) for trainer Michael McCarthy; and El Encinal (Turf, 3f 38:80) for trainer Francisco Garcia.

Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup must be made by Monday at 12 p.m. PT. The pre-entered fields will be announced on Wednesday starting at 9 a.m.

CARRYOVER HELPS FUEL $73K PAYOUT IN FRIDAY’S $2 PICK 6

With a carryover of $47,834 bolstering the pool, Friday’s $2 Pick Six at Santa Anita returned $73,040.60 for three winning tickets. Also on Friday, the $1 Super Hi 5 pool started with a carryover of $9,719 and paid $17,774.20. The Super Hi 5, which requires selecting the top five finishers in exact order, is offered on the final race each race day.

In the Pick Six, there was $320,619 in new money wagered, bringing the total pool to $368,453. The hefty payout came despite three winning favorites in the sequence.

Two of the winning tickets were purchased through TwinSpires Racing and the other through Racing Gaming Services. The two winners via TwinSpires Racing cost $2,016 and $16, respectively, according to the Santa Anita mutuels department. The winner via RGS was a $1,400 ticket.

The biggest upset in Friday’s sequence came in the opening leg when Winds of Freedom, a heavy 1-5 favorite for trainer Mark Glatt and logical Pick Six “single,” stumbled badly at the break and finished last under Edwin Maldonado. The winner of the race, Far Western for trainer Ryan Hanson with Ricky Gonzalez up, was the second-longest shot on the board and returned $26.60.

The other double-digit winner in the sequence was Princess Midnight, who scored in the sixth race under Diego Herrera and paid $21. Princess Midnight is owned and trained by longtime horseman Joe Herrick. It was Herrick’s second win from six starts this year, all of them made by Princess Midnight.

The Pick Six consolation payout for tickets with 5-of-6 winners was $515.60. The winning horses in Friday’s Pick Six starting with the third race were #4 Far Western ($26.60), #6 Call Me Sir ($3.20*), #4 Beauty N The Bolt ($6.40*), #2 Princess Midnight ($21), #3 I’m Ripped ($6.20*) and #1 Upcharge ($6.40).

In the Super Hi 5, winner Upcharge was the 2-1 second choice for trainer Phil D’Amato with Gonzales in the irons. She was followed across the wire by third-choice Last Elizabethan (9-2), Blue Fashion (16-1), Step It Out (12-1) and Nakota (42-1).

With a nine-race card Saturday starting at 1 p.m. PT, the Pick Six starts with the fourth race at approximately 2:30 p.m. The Super Hi 5 will be offered on the ninth and final at approximately 5 p.m.

SATURDAY’S $1 COAST-TO-COAST PICK 5 STARTS AT 2:08 P.M. PT

The $1 Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 on Saturday kicks off at 2:08 p.m. PT with the ninth race from Gulfstream Park, a one-mile maiden race on turf that drew an overflow field of 13 2-year-old fillies. The highly competitive sequence averages 10 starters per race before scratches.

In the opening leg, the tepid 4-1 favorite on the morning line is Jalila for trainer Gustavo Delgado with Miguel Vasquez up. By Justify, Jalila will have to overcome being parked outside in post 12 for the short run-up to the first turn.

The second leg from Gulfstream Park, the $200,000 Susan’s Girl Stakes for 2-year-old fillies bred in Florida, is seven furlongs on dirt. It features the lone prohibitive favorite in Saturday’s sequence. R Morning Brew, trained by Saffie Joseph and ridden by Edgard Zayas, is 4-5 on the morning line in a field of seven.

The action then shifts to Santa Anita for its sixth race, a $50,000 maiden-claimer at six furlongs on turf. In a field of 11, Prosper is the 5-2 program favorite for trainer John Sadler with Hector Berrios up.

Then it’s back to Gulfstream for its 12th race, $16,000 maiden-claimer at 1 1/16 miles on turf. An overflow field of 14 is signed on with 12 to run. In the main body of the field, Ragtap Girl for Joseph is the lukewarm 4-1 favorite. She will have Micah Husbands in the irons.

The anchor leg is the eighth race from Santa Anita, the $80,000 Lure Stakes at one mile on turf. Man O Rose, trained by Jeff Mullins with Edwin Maldonado up, is the 5-2 program favorite.

The Coast-to-Coast Pick 5, which offers a player-friendly 15 percent takeout rate, is offered every Saturday and Sunday through the end of the Santa Anita Autumn Meet Oct. 27.

FINISH LINES: Saturday’s feature, the $80,000 Lure Stakes, goes as the eighth race with post time set for 4:34 p.m. PT. Man O Rose, trained by Jeff Mullins with Edwin Maldonado up, is the 5-2 program favorite in a competitive field of nine…Jockeys Ricky Gonzalez and Juan Hernandez each rode two winners Friday. An eight-race card is set for Sunday with first post at 1 p.m…Little Red Feather’s Billy Koch will be host Tom Quigley’s handicapping guest Sunday on the Santa Anita simulcast feed starting at 11:50 a.m.
