WORKS: GOLIAD GEARS UP FOR BREEDERS’ CUP MILE

Goliad, who last month shipped to Kentucky Downs and won two races in a span of six days including a $2 million stakes, was among several notable workers Friday at Santa Anita.

Trained by Richard Mandella, Goliad worked six furlongs on the synthetic training track in 1:12.80. It was his second work since his trip to Kentucky Downs where he bagged a $500,000 handicap plus the $2 million, GIII Mint Millions, both at a mile on turf.

Goliad, a seven-year-old War Front gelding, is being pointed to the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile Nov. 2 at Del Mar.

Among the workers for John Sadler were Alpha Bella, runner-up in the GII Zenyatta Sept. 29 at Santa Anita; and For All Mankind, second in the GII Santa Anita Sprint, also Sept. 29. Alpha Bella worked four furlongs in 48.40 seconds. The 4-year-old Justify filly is a candidate for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff. For All Mankind, a 5-year-old Into Mischief gelding, earned a bullet when drilling four furlongs in 47.20 seconds.

Also returning to the work tab for Sadler was Indispensable. He most recently finished third in the GIII Oklahoma Derby Sept. 29 at Remington Park. By Constitution, Indispensable worked four furlongs in 49.20 seconds.

ALLOWANCE, MAIDEN RACES FEATURE INTRIGUING PROSPECTS

After two blockbuster weekends to open the Santa Anita Autumn Meet, which included the inaugural California Crown program on Sept. 28, this week’s action at The Great Race Place features a heavy dose of maiden and allowance races.

Saturday’s program, which is anchored by the $100,000 California Distaff Handicap on the hillside turf course, also includes two open maiden races and three allowance events. One of the maiden races, the sixth at a mile on dirt, includes a second go-around for 2-year-old filly Watershed Moment. When debuting for trainer Richard Baltas going a mile on turf at Del Mar Sept. 6, Watershed Moment had the lead in mid-stretch under Armando Ayuso before veering left and busting through the rail.

According to Baltas, Watershed Moment emerged from her eventful debut not much worse for wear.

“She came out of it pretty unscathed actually,” Baltas said this week.

Watershed Moment now switches to dirt and will add blinkers for start No. 2. The daughter of Omaha Beach has had two five-furlong works since her debut, including a move clocked in 1:01.00 last Saturday at Santa Anita.

“These Omaha Beach’s seem to do well on dirt or turf. Hopefully I have her fit enough to go a mile on dirt,” Baltas said.

Also in the field is first-time starter Lady Chic for trainer John Sadler and owner Don Alberto Stable. By Tapit out of graded stakes placed Luminance, Lady Chic commanded $500,000 at auction last November. She will have Hector Berrios aboard for her unveiling.

The favorite in Saturday’s sixth is first-time starter Howin, who is 5-2 for trainer Bob Baffert. A $500,000 auction buy, she is a daughter of Gun Runner owned by Baoma Corp. Juan Hernandez rides.

Below is a quick rundown of Saturday’s other maiden and allowance races for open company. First post for a nine-race card is 1 p.m. PT.

3rd race: This first-level allowance for fillies and mares at one mile on dirt could have a standout in Cavalieri for Baffert. In her debut going a mile Aug. 29 at Del Mar, the 3-year-old Nyquist filly went to the lead under Hernandez and kicked clear to win by two lengths. Owned by Speedway Stable, she’s 6-5 on the morning line.

5th race: This is a second-level allowance at a 1 1/8 miles on turf. The 2-1 program favorite is Eye on Ry for trainer Ron Ellis. The 4-year-old Malibu Moon gelding uncorked a field-high 96 Beyer Speed Figure when rallying to win an entry-level allowance at a mile on turf last out on Sept. 7 at Del Mar. Other key principals are California-bred stakes winner Old Pal (5-2) for trainer Mark Glatt and Reiquist (7-2) for trainer Tim Yakteen.

7th race: This first-level allowance at a mile on turf features a wide-open group of nine fillies and mares. The lukewarm 7-2 program favorite is Hannah Buckle for trainer Leonard Powell. Imported from Ireland, the 3-year-old filly by Bated Breath graduated going a mile on turf Aug. 2 at Del Mar then finished off the board with a troubled trip against allowance foes a month later at Del Mar. Another European import, Montjica, is the 4-1 second choice for trainer Mark Glatt. The 4-year-old Zoustar filly finished off the board in her U.S. debut going 1 1/16 miles on turf Sept. 8 at Del Mar. She will have Hall of Famer Mike Smith in the irons.

8th race: A field of nine is entered in this 1 1/16-mile maiden race on dirt. The 9-5 program favorite is Magnify for Baffert. In her second start going a mile at Del Mar Aug. 22, the 3-year-old Justify colt rallied to be second by 1 ¾ lengths under Kazushi Kimura. Magnify will have Hector Berrios aboard for start No. 3. A pair of second-time starters, Wise Counsel (10-1) and Shofner (12-1) could show improvement second time out. Wise Counsel, a 3-year-old Curlin colt trained by Michael McCarthy, rallied to be third in his debut going a mile May 18 at Santa Anita. Shofner (12-1), a 3-year-old Medaglia d’Oro colt bought for $625,000 earlier this year, is trained by John Shirreffs. He rallied to be third in his debut when sprinting 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 18.
