D’AMATO’S THOUGHT PROCESS GOES FOR A STAKES DOUBLE IN SUNDAY’S GIII, $100,000 SURFER GIRL STAKES FOR 2-YEAR-OLD FILLIES GOING A MILE ON TURF AT SANTA ANITA

ARCADIA, CA (Oct. 3, 2024)—After scoring in last month’s Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, Thought Process will try and make it a stakes double in the GIII, $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at a mile on turf Sunday at Santa Anita.

Trained by Phil D’Amato, Thought Process raced in hand while forwardly placed by Hector Berrios in the one mile Del Mar Juvenile Turf. She then took control at the top of the stretch and was never challenged to win comfortably by two lengths.

By Collected, Thought Process previously earned her diploma at Del Mar when switched to turf and stretched out to a mile for the first time Aug. 17. She is owned by Little Red Feather Racing, Madaket Stables and the Estate of Brereton C. Jones. Berrios again has the call on Thought Process.

Casalu set the pace in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf before weakening to fourth. It was her first time on turf and first time racing around two turns. Trained by Bob Baffert, Casalu won her debut sprinting five furlongs on dirt at Del Mar in July before finishing third in the GIII Sorrento going six furlongs.

By Caracaro, Casalu was purchased for $775,000 at this year’s OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale. She is owned by Michael Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.

Jack’s Magic Girl was entered in the Surfer Girl Thursday after a day earlier being entered in Saturday’s GII Oak Leaf Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Trained by O.J Jauregui, Jack’s Magic Girl graduated going a mile on turf in her debut at Del Mar Aug. 3. She next switched to dirt for the GI Del Mar Debutante going seven furlongs and finished fourth.

By Good Magic, Jack’s Magic Girl is owned by Craig W. Drager, Rick Johnson and Jose Parga. Jauregui purchased the filly for $100,000 at this year’s OBS April sale.
