Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis (Sun., April 14, 2013)

Flower Power is a consistent sort with solid figures and returns to his winning level while retaining Bejarano. He seems the logical choice in the opener so we’ll make him a straight play and rolling exotic single.

Promiscuoussuances loves this downhill turf course and seems primed for another big effort in today’s second race. She’s solid in the speed figure department and will be tough to catch if she can shake loose early without undue pressure. Lanida was beaten as the choice vs. similar recently but is capable of bouncing back. Baze will have her doing her best work late. We’ll double the race in our rolling exotics; Lanida will be the better price of the two so we’ll put her on top.

Maker or Breaker continues to improve for Baffert and looks well spotted in the third race to extend her winning streak to three. She has a good stalking style and continues to impress in the morning. Egg Drop has sharp recent speed figures to make her a strong fit despite the raise in class. She can be tough on the front end or from a stalking position. Both should be used in rolling exotic play; Maker or Breaker deserves top billing.

In the fifth raced, Scorpion Time, first off the claim for red hot trainer Kitcheingman, is better than his last race shows and should draft into a perfect, ground-saving, second flight trip. Freshened since mid-February, he should be set for a huge try for a stable that does very well with first-off-the-claim runners. Arcordoro likes the front end and will be tough to catch if not pressured early. He’s looked razor s harp in the morning lately and Pedroza stays aboard. We’ll use both in our rolling exotics and then have a few extra tickets with Arcodoro on top.

Too Many Rules gets her easiest chance yet and looks ready to graduate in the sixth race. The Drysdale-trained filly must overcome the outside draw but she exits a decent sprint and should have enough tactical speed to get over and secure a proper spot. In a below par field for the level, she seems quite logical. We’ll make her a straight play and rolling exotic single.

Scat Patty has improving form for Cerin and with another forward move in today’s seventh race should be tough to beat in a weak maiden claiming dash for sophomore fillies. This shortened trip can only help her cause. Beautiful Spirit has shown some zip in the morning for Troeger and looks like a dangerous newcomer. Both should be used in your rolling exotics; we’ll give a very slight edge to Scat Paddy.

Sweet Swap has good, consistent form over this course and should fire another big shot in the seventh race. He continues to impress in the morning for Sadler and should benefit greatly from a major rider switch to Bejarano. Ivanho will be rolling late and looks clearly like the most dangerous of the closers. We’ll use both in our rolling exotics while preferring Sweet Swap on top.

In the eighth race, Rousing Sermon may have been a bit rusty in his recent comeback but won’t be today. He’s ready for a huge run and switches to Bejarano. Let’s make him a strong straight play and rolling exotic single at anywhere near his morning line odds of 3-1.

Benedict Audrey drops into a high priced claimer in the nightcap and looks well spotted to graduate. He draws a much better post today while retaining Garcia and should be on or near the lead throughout. Blue Cherokee stretches out after a pair of downhill turf tries and may try gate-to-wire tactics. On pedigree, he should like the trip. Maxx the Giant ran well at this level down the hill last time out and won’t have to improve much to win. Toss him in. We’ll triple the race in our rolling exotics and then press a bit with Benedict Audrey on top.
