Prime Picks - Handicapping with Jeff Siegel

Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 02:26

Today’s program – while lacking yesterday’s star power – seems much more attractive from a handicapping standpoint and several of the rolling exotics offer the potential for a nice payoff. We’ll play all but the first race – a $20,000 claimer that should be won by one of the Mullins entrants (#1 Laser Point or #2 Fenice) and begin our action in the second event.

The presence of Zenyatta makes it all worthwhile but we’ve always preached that you must play the card – never let the card play you – and today’s program has a number of races that seem inscrutable and a few others that offer little to no value. Therefore, we’re taking an extremely conservative approach. Hopefully, some of our readers have a better feel for the card than we do.

A fairly decent Friday program offers some wagering value in the rolling exotics and we’ll begin the proceedings using two horses in the opener. #5 Allie Wolff, first off the claim for Spawr and adding blinkers, has the route-to-sprint angle working in her favor and figures very tough if she repeats her runner up try in her debut two runs back. Talamo stays aboard. #6 Champagneandlilies, a closing third in her only outing for Cerin (excellent with second-time starting maidens), seems sure to improve and looks capable of producing the last run. She’s our top pick in the race.

We have a nice Pick-6 carryover to attack – there’s $81,826 already in the pool for Thursday’s program – so let’s give it our best shot after what looks to be a very chalky early daily double.

Wednesday’s program begins with a few attractive rolling exotic possibilities but gets a little thin later on, so let’s try to do some damage early on as we kick off Zenyatta week at Santa Anita.

Sunday’s program is spiced by a $207,271 Pick-6 carryover but with turf racing not likely and a number of potentially key scratches unavailable as this is penned, we’ll suggest a conservative ticket after merely dabbling in the first three events.

The first race brings back #1 Good Measure, a Carla Gaines-trained gelding trying to make amends after failing at 50 cents on the dollar in a similar two-turn maiden event in late January. He’s worked very well since, has little to beat and seems like the winner at odds-on. There’s no value here, so we’ll pass.
