L.A. WOMAN STAKES QUOTES
VICTOR ESPINOZA, TEDDY’S PROMISE, WINNER: “It was nice and easy today. I didn’t want to push or anything since the race (Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov.2) is less than a month away. I want to win but I don’t want to hurt her, she’s a filly, so she’s more sensitive. Everything worked out well and it was a good race.”
RON ELLIS, TEDDY’S PROMISE, 17-10 FAVORITE, WINNER: “That (being outside) helps her a lot, but the freshening has really helped her a lot. She’s really turned the corner mentally and decided to work with us instead of against us.
“She’s always been a tough filly to train, but since this little break, she’s been great. She’s been working stronger. I thought she ran one of her best races today and I thought she would coming in. That’s the kindest she’s ever gone to the gate and the kindest that she’s ever gone the first part of the race.”
A.C. AVILA, GREAT HOT, SECOND: “We want to go in to the Breeders’ Cup Mile but we will wait and see how she comes out of this. After that she will be going to the Keeneland November sales. I don’t know if she will sell or not, but that’s where she will be.”
CO-OWNER/BREEDER TED NICHOLS, TEDDY’S PROMISE, WINNER: “It was easy; she won by two, at least two lengths. She ran just fine. She hasn’t raced for a little while so we freshened her up and she came back running.
In response to what’s next for his filly:
“Uh huh! (smiles big.) She’s going to the Breeders’ Cup.”
NOTES: Ellis said Teddy’s Promise would be pointed to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at seven furlongs on Nov. 2. Winning owner/breeder Ted and Judy Nichols are from Oceanside.
