TOKYO CITY CUP STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, SKY KINGDOM, WINNER: “I was outside the speed today. I let my horse break on his own and just cruise around. He relaxed perfectly, and when I kicked in he just took off. My plan was to let somebody go to the lead and let my horse sit on the outside and stay comfortable, and that is exactly the way it went today.”

EDWIN MALDONADO, OILISBLACKGOLD, SECOND: “I thought they were going to go a little quicker today. They went at a slow pace so it gave the winner a win. My horse ran good. I thought I had the race at the quarter pole. I started to move in slowly but turning for home the two (Sky Kingdom) kicked away due to the slow pace.”

TRAINER QUOTES

BOB BAFFERT, SKY KINGDOM, WINNER: “He really looked great today. The only spot to run him was a mile and a half. I didn’t know if he could do it . . . It’s pretty exciting. You’re not sure how you’re going to do going in, but the horse ran so well. He really stepped it up today so we’re pretty excited about it.

“I wasn’t sure how he would run today but he was training really well . . . It just worked out great, and he looked so beautiful in the paddock. He’s a beautiful horse . . . I think any horse can go a mile and a half if it gets the right pace.

“He was very relaxed. He has a beautiful, fluid stride . . . It was a perfect trip for him. He got everything his way. I’m happy for (owners) Westrock. This is my first stakes win for them. I’ve been training for them a year and a half.”

CRAIG DOLLASE, OILISBLACKGOLD, SECOND: “We’re happy. We’re already making plans for November (in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon). We’re working backwards from there.”

MIKE PUYPE, CALIDOSCOPIO, 5-2 FAVORITE, FIFTH: “Aaron (Gryder) was looking for a spot all the way down the backside. He was sitting waiting, waiting, and the race ran away from him.”

MIKE MITCHELL, DHAAMER, 5-2 SECOND CHOICE, SIXTH: He had no comment.

NOTES: The winning owners are Scott and Joe Ford of Little Rock, Arkansas, who race as Westrock Stables LLC.
