PALOS VERDES STAKES QUOTES
JOE TALAMO, SAHARA SKY, WINNER: (In response to the horse coming off a layoff and going off at such a big price): “I was real confident. I know Jerry (Hollendorfer) always has them nice and tight off the layoff. He ran unbelievable. That was actually the closest he’s ever run; I thought he was going to be 10 lengths further back than he was. He broke sharply, he put me right there, and I still had a lot of horse when I called on him. I just followed him (Rafael Bejarano on Justin Phillip) the whole race; whatever he did, I did. I had a lot of horse today.”
MARTIN PEDROZA, PRIVATE ZONE, SECOND: “It was like a Quarter Horse in there trying to burn me out (referring to Edwin Maldonado on Comma to the Top.) My horse never could relax, he just kept seeing the other horse, wanted to go after him, and I didn’t want to choke him back, it’s only six furlongs. He never stopped, my horse was always running, even when the other horse (Sahara Sky) ran by him, he was still running.”
RAFAEL BEJARANO, JUSTIN PHILLIP, 5-2 FAVORITE, THIRD: “The pace was good for me and I was four lengths behind from the speed. When he came running in the stretch, he didn’t show me what I expected.”
JERRY HOLLENDORFER, SAHARA SKY, WINNER: “A fresh horse will break a lot better and maybe lay a lot closer. In the past when you have to move this horse, you have to make him move. But he kind of halfway moved himself today and Joe (Talamo) didn’t have to prompt him too much.
“We both thought that the two speed horses would hook up and maybe make a good pace for us. That’s the key to winning a race like this. We had to have a little pace in front of us for that particular kind of horse, so we got lucky today and he came through for us.”
NOTES: The winning owners are Hollendorfer, of Port Richmond, CA, and Kim Lloyd, who races as Sweetwater Stable, of Claremont, CA.
