RAFAEL BEJARANO, BOOK REVIEW, WINNER: “I saw there was a lot of speed in the race and that was very good for me. I let her do whatever she felt comfortable with. I knew she was going to come running at the end, so I just waited for the right time, and it worked.

“Mr. Baffert has been a good trainer for a long time and he always gives me a good opportunity. My business has been down a little but I’m very appreciative of what he does for me.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, RENEESGOTZIP, SECOND: “She ran really good. She did everything I was wanting her to do except get to the line first. We dueled really hard and the other filly (Book Review) came through us when we were all staggered towards the end of the race and beat us today. She got hooked every bit of the way and she didn’t get any opportunity to take a breath of air. She kept to her task and ran a tremendous race.”

COREY NAKATANI, MY MISS AURELIA, 2-5 FAVORITE, THIRD: “Not the ideal trip. I wanted to be back a little ways. I was sitting there against her and they’re riding next to me and you move on her and she goes. I was trying to wait-wait-wait and when you do that, it takes the race away from her. Wasn’t the best of trips.”

BOB BAFFERT, BOOK REVIEW, WINNER: “The Wests (owners Gary and Mary) wanted to see the horse run here (explaining why she was sent from the East Coast) and this race really looked like the logical spot for her. She’s a late-running sprinter. She got here, she looked great, she trained really well so we took a stab at it and it worked out.

“If you look at her form, she either shows up or she doesn’t, and today was a day to show up. I’m happy. She ran great. It’s great to be here opening day. I love opening day and to win a Grade I, that’s like a Christmas gift to myself.”

PETER MILLER, RENEESGOTZIP, SECOND: “She ran her heart out. She ran her eyeballs out, too good to lose, just leave it at that.”

NOTES: This was Baffert’s seventh La Brea win. The winning owners are Gary and Mary West from Omaha, Nebraska.
