CHANDELIER STAKES QUOTES
RAFAEL BEJARANO, EXECUTIVEPRIVILEGE, WINNER: “She impressed me today. When I saw a lot of scratches in the race, especially the speed, I had no choice but to send her. She brought me to the lead easy and I was concerned a little bit, but after the first turn I knew I had so much horse. She was so relaxed. I think after this race she’ll be ready for the Breeders’ Cup. She’s going to be tough.”
JOE TALAMO, SCARLET STRIKE, SECOND: “She ran an unbelievable race. I mean, for just breaking her maiden and coming into a Grade I like that, Jerry (Hollendorfer) did a great job getting her to this race. There’s no doubt that she ran second to the best two-year-old filly in the country. That was an unbelievable effort by the winner – I have to take my hat off to her. I was very impressed with my horse. She’s a real nice filly. I wish we would have had a little bit more pace, but that happens sometimes – she really ran a dynamite race.”
BOB BAFFERT, EXECUTIVEPRIVILEGE, WINNER: “She’s just a really good filly. We just got to keep her healthy. That’s the whole deal.”
Asked if he expected her to be in front: “If she breaks well, going long, I said don’t give her a lot to do. She’s fast. She ran like she was (had been) working. She’s very special. We’ve just got to keep her healthy. You need a lot of horse and a little luck (to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 2). You need all that, but she’s special. You could tell the way she sprinted for home she was in control so it worked out right.”
MIKE PEGRAM, EXECUTIVEPRIVELAGE, WINNER: “We were in a great position like this with Looking At Lucky. That’s what makes you realize how tough the Breeders’ Cup is to win because you can have the best horse and may not get the job done. She’s done everything right and she’s just so classy. She’s our Looking At Lucky without (male equipment). When we get a call from Bob (Baffert) saying that “we’re buying”, we know not to ask that next question. The first time that came in was Looking At Lucky. You have to take your hat off to Bob. He’s got an eye for a horse that’s been proven over and over again.”
NOTES: The winning owners are Mike Pegram of Phoenix, Karl Watson of Tucson and Paul Weitman of Tucson. For Baffert, this was the eighth win in this race, formerly run as the Oak Leaf Stakes. D. Wayne Lukas holds the record winners in the Oak Leaf/Chandelier with nine. Baffert’s previous winners were Vivid Angel, 1997; Excellent Meeting, 1998; Chilukki, 1999; Notable Career, 2000; Composure, 2002; Diamond Omi, 2005; and Cry and Catch Me, 2007.
