GARRETT GOMEZ, BROKEN DREAMS, WINNER: “It’s good to start off on a winning note, especially in a stakes race. Very seldom do we get a stakes race so early in the day, on top of that having it be my first mount of the meet. Anytime you win a race here at Santa Anita it’s always fun. I thought Unzip Me would be out there and a couple of them might put some pressure on her. She didn’t break all that well and he (Bejarano) kind of gunned her up in between horses a little bit. I knew that would help me because he was about a length behind leaving the gate, so I knew he had to make up a length and try to put her where he wanted her. After we made the right handed turn, the pace picked up pretty good. At that point I sat in behind Victor (Espinoza) until we started to turn for home. I found myself back towards the fence a little bit and had to angle in, and she just stayed on well. This is a great distance for her. Down at Del Mar, five-eighths of a mile is just a little too short for her. She wants to settle just a little bit and six and a half furlongs is a really good distance for her.”

TOM PROCTOR, BROKEN DREAMS, WINNER: “Rock and roll is all I can say. She actually ran good last time (fourth by 1 ¼ lengths in the five-furlong Daisycutter Handicap on Aug. 12). The stretch at Del Mar is a little too short for her. It was really one of her better races, and I thought if she could run that way today, maybe she’d win. It’s nice to see her win a stakes. This was a good bunch of fillies.”

Asked what he might be looking at for Broken Dreams beyond this race, Proctor said: “Give her a bath.”

MARTY JONES, UNZIP ME, 4-5 FAVORITE, FOURTH: “She was kind of on the muscle down the backstretch and it might have caught up with her the last part of it, but she ran hard.”

NOTES: The winning is owner is Leonard Lavin of Glen Coe, IL, who races as Glen Hill Farm.
