JOEL ROSARIO, MR GRUFF, Winner: “I knew I had to get a good break. My horse and another outside of me were the only speed. I let the other horses on the outside go for a little while, then after that I took the lead. He’s running good, and he’s a nice horse.”

RON ELLIS, MR GRUFF, WINNER: “Joel (Rosario) did a good job. The horse broke a little flat-footed. He didn’t rush him and just kind of let him ease his way up there. It all went as planned after that.”
“It was just his back (when asked why he was off from April 18, 2009 to March 19, 2010). Actually, I thought he was good enough down the hill to be able to run in the Breeders’ Cup (Turf Sprint last Nov. 7) last year, and when he won the San Simeon (on April 18, 2009) I just gave him some time off. When I brought him back, he kind of strained his back and we sent him to (owner) Gary Broad’s farm, Oakmont, and they fixed him up and sent him back 110 percent.”
“We’ve always wanted to stretch him out. His mom won a graded stake at a mile and a sixteenth, so we’re probably going to look at the Shoemaker Mile (Grade I, Hollywood Park, $250,000, May 31).”

NOTES: Winning owner Gary Broad is from Palm Desert.
