AARON GRYDER, DESERT CODE, WINNER: “After the first quarter mile, I was saying ‘This is sweet.’ When he left he gate as well as he did, I just decided to drop his head and let him get away from them a little bit. They decided to take Euroglide back and that helped us too. I know David (Hofmans) thought that maybe he’d need a race, but I’ve been working him and he’s worked well, but once you raise up on him, he doesn’t gallop out that well. He may’ve gotten a little tired today but he wasn’t slowing down any.”

DAVID HOFMANS, DESERT CODE, WINNER: “I didn’t expect him to be in front. I expected him to be lying second or third, because I thought there was some speed in there. The fractions were pretty slow for coming down the hill, but that’s why he’s so versatile. We thought there was a lot of speed in there, and I told Aaron (Gryder) to use his judgment. It looked like they all broke well, but everybody jumped back, so he kicked on. They went :44 (:44.38 for the half mile) today; in the Breeders’ Cup, they went :41 and 4/5. That’s a big difference . . . I thought maybe he would need this race, but I was wrong.”

NOTES: Hofmans said he didn’t know what race might be next, but that he might try synthetic or stretch him out. The winning owner is Susan Osborne of Glendale, who races as Tarabilla Farms, Inc. -30-
