Santa Monica Handicap Quotes
Jockey QuotesGARRETT GOMEZ, VENTURA, WINNER: “She was traveling beautifully for me. It felt like I had a loaded gun the whole time. The only reason I had to get into her a little was that when she makes the lead, she thinks her job is done. That’s the only reason she got beat in the race at Hollywood Park (July 5, CashCall Mile). I’ve learned that I’ve just got to spank her a little bit and that way, she knows she’s not done.”
Trainer QuotesBOBBY FRANKEL, VENTURA, WINNER, AND JIBBOOM, SECOND: “I was nervous at that price, and she hadn’t been out in a while, but I was satisfied with the way it turned out. It worked out perfect. I didn’t really trainer her (Ventura) that hard, and you’re always a little nervous being away three months. If she’s 10-1, I wouldn’t have been so nervous.”
Asked about what race might be next: “They got a race in Keeneland that she won last year, it’s a Grade I this year, it’s $300,000 and the horses weight themselves, so it’s not a handicap. (He was referring to the Vinery Madison Stakes at seven furlongs on April 9. The race was a Grade II last year). From there, I might have to put her back on the grass.”
Asked if he was comfortable watching Ventura through the stretch: “I was comfortable about 10 jumps from the wire, but I was glad that the gray (Jibboom) was second.”
Asked if the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Oak Tree in early November would be her ultimate goal: “Probably so.”
NOTES: Frankel is the career leader at Santa Anita with 906 wins (not including Oak Tree). He is second in stakes wins with 141. Charlie Whittingham leads with 204. Frankel won the Santa Monica Handicap in 2000 with Honest Lady.
