JOCKEY QUOTES

MARIO GUTIERREZ, I’LL HAVE ANOTHER, WINNER: “This is so unbelievable. He is such a good horse and he gave me a big kick at the end. There wasn’t any doubt in my mind that my horse would give me everything in the stretch leading up to the wire.”

JOEL ROSARIO, CREATIVE CAUSE, SECOND: “Everything went well. I’ve ridden the winner before (I’ll Have Another) and he can run. My horse gave me 100 percent, but I think we were second-best today. Sometimes it’s hard to keep winning. I waited inside and had a perfect trip.

JOCKEY QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, LADY OF SHAMROCK, WINNER:“This filly is really fun to ride because she has quite a turn of foot. She’s kind of a tall lanky filly, but she gets over the grass unbelievably.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, BYRAMA SECOND: “I’ve ridden both (Byrama and Lady of Shamrock), and that filly’s probably just a better filly right now. I had a really good trip and had a decent setup in front of me, but she ran a respectable race. Everything worked out well, and we were just second best today.”

MIKE SMITH, AMAZOMBIE, WINNER: “I’m really just beside myself right now. For it to happen on Amazombie is so fitting. Who could have drawn it up any better? I’m just really happy that I finally got to 5,000. Those last two wins were tough. I’m glad that I got it over with. I was a little bit concerned at the quarter-pole today, but by the time I reached the eighth-pole I was very comfortable. This horse is a champ.”

Further comments on 5,000 wins:

“The times that are the happiest seem to come with a big relief after.

JOCKEY QUOTES
ALONSO QUINONEZ, CALIMONCO, WINNER: “I thought I moved a little too soon, but I had to go when I saw a hole open up. He was very game when I asked him today. He attacked the horse on the lead and he never gave up. When he got to the lead he kind of waited a little, but when the other horse on the outside came to him he turned him away.”

JOCKEY QUOTES
ESWAN FLORES, WARREN’S AMBER, WINNER: “My horse helped me out a lot. This filly just kept running. I want to thank Jorge (Gutierrez) for the opportunity. He trained the filly very good and she was sharp. She did it all.”
MIKE SMITH, STARLIGHT MAGIC, SECOND: “She’s a nice, nice, mare. She hadn’t run in a while and it showed a little bit today. I hit the front and when I did she started to get a bit tired at the end. If she had another work under her belt we probably would have got there.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, DERBY GOLD, WINNER: “This was his second time out. The first time he raced he wore blinkers and he didn’t know what was going on. He was waiting for company last race and the winner just flew right by him. He’s been learning a lot, and today he relaxed well. Just look at what he showed today. He’s a really good horse.”

JOCKEY QUOTES
JOEL ROSARIO, BOURBON BAY, WINNER: “This is a really good horse. I’ve never been on him before, but he has a nice turn of foot. He tries really hard at this distance. My horse felt good on the track. I don’t know how the others handled the rain, but everything worked out perfect for my horse.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, VAMO A GALUPIAR, WINNER: “The ground has actually been on the hard side the past few days, so the rain actually did us some good. The track had a give to it, which is really good for my filly because she handles the off track. I think if you look at her past performances she’s won every time the track has been soft, and that’s what it was today. It was a bit soft, but very safe. This horse was a victim of circumstances last time. She comes from out of it, so sometimes you get trapped when that happens, and that’s exactly what happened last time.

JOCKEY QUOTES

DAVID FLORES, DYNAMIC HOST, WINNER: “I had an excellent trip. He broke slow like he always does, so I wasn’t worried about it. He jumped in the bit the first time we got to the first stretch so I had to take control of him. On the second turn I let him get comfortable and he moved up to the leaders. I had to work hard from the turn onwards because he’s lazy when he gets the lead. He’s got the ability to go that far, so the distance of the race was on our side. I had great position in the race, and I took advantage of that. I’m glad we came out in front.
