JOCKEYS

GARRETT GOMEZ, MIZDIRECTION, WINNER: “My horse broke running and she got up on her feet right away. I didn’t expect to have any horses in front of me because I didn’t feel like there was that much speed. I thought maybe O’Neill’s filly (Separate Forest) and Marty’s filly (Unzip Me) would show the most speed and I’d be somewhere right behind them.

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, RUMOR, WINNER: “Going up the backside, the five horse (Equitana) was getting out, so I dropped my filly down to the inside. There was plenty of room so I let her slide up in there and I let out a notch to secure a spot. When we turned for home I asked her and she was there for me. Richard’s taken his time and he’s done a tremendous job with her.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

ALONSO QUINONEZ, CHIPS ALL IN, WINNER: “My horse was just galloping around there. I knew the leader (Champions Gate) was going really easy, so I didn’t want him to get the jump on me. I knew Gomez (on Sheer Talent) was right behind me going to the far turn and I didn’t want to let him push me out, so I had to hold my position. When we turned for home, he put himself in the race and when I hit him left-handed, he re-broke.

JOCKEY QUOTES

VICTOR ESPINOZA, TEDDY’S PROMISE, WINNER: “The last time that she ran, I really liked her. Today I thought she was ready, and I thought she would like it better over here on the dirt. I had so much horse today I wasn’t expecting anybody to come near me. She’s a runner.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, ISMENE, WINNER: “She’s extremely talented, to say the least. What’s exciting about her is there’s room to improve. She’s learning to relax and to rate and she wants to learn. She was a little fresh leaving the gate today, but she settled right down. I definitely think she can stretch out the way she’s improving.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, GOT EVEN, WINNER: “I didn’t really expect him to show that much speed but he was doing it well, with his ears up. I knew he was shortening up and I really didn’t know what to expect, but he was able to clear ‘em and stretch ‘em out pretty good. The way it worked out, he took most of the run out of ‘em. When we turned for home, I went ahead and asked him for what he had. When we passed the eighth pole, he kind of flattened out a little bit, but he had enough left.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, MR. COMMONS, FIRST: "Since I got through it was great. I've learned that you can point this horse at a wall and he'll run through it if I ask him to. He really does everything you tell him so normally when you're that big of a favorite you'll probably go around but I was going to be able to cut the corner and make up three lengths. All I need is a very small seam with him."

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, THE FACTOR, WINNER: “He was really sharp and was ready to win. Plus, he really likes this track. I decided to let him run and put me wherever he wanted to put me, and look at what he did. I didn’t want to go to the rail today. I wanted to stay a little bit off and if somebody wanted to go, I just let them go and stayed outside. I don’t think there was a horse that could beat him today, he was really sharp.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

BRICE BLANC, ALL STAR HEART, WINNER: “I had a beautiful trip. I just followed Malibu Pier all the way around which was pretty much my strategy. My filly relaxed really nice and did what I wanted her to do at the top of the lane and I was able to out kick her. She has a tremendous finish. She’s a big strong filly who can cover a lot of ground.”
