JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, ANTHONY’S CROSS, WINNER: “He broke a little slow. He showed me a little bit of speed in the first turn and I just let him go to find where he wanted to be. I could see the favorite (Tapizar) was giving (Garrett) Gomez some trouble. I saw (Garrett) Gomez try to take his horse back a bit and his horse fought him a little bit. I stayed a little closer to the pace today but it probably didn’t make the difference in the race. He’s a good horse and it was no surprise to see him run that good.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, VISION IN GOLD, WINNER: “I had a really good trip. Ron told me to let her place herself and I did. We didn’t think we’d be on the lead, but she was comfortable there, so why change it? When we passed the three-quarter pole and started down the backside, she had her ears up and she was very relaxed. At the top of the stretch, when that other horse (Zardana) came up outside of us, my filly was just waiting for competition and she finished really strong. She’s improved a lot in her last two races.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, GLADDING, WINNER: “I thought (Joe Talamo) was going to send the seven (Aggie Engineer), but when I saw him take a hold it let me go to the lead really easy. I decided to stay there and stay close to everybody. I was really comfortable with the pace and I was waiting for the stretch. When I felt the other horse (Spurrier) come running from the outside, I made sure to try and keep my horse on the lead down the stretch and let him explode. He showed me a big kick.

JOCKEY QUOTE

JOEL ROSARIO, ZAZU, WINNER: “I saw I was going to have a clean trip inside, and I took it. She’s a nice filly. Last time I rode her she finished second to another nice filly (California Nectar) at seven furlongs. Today she showed me a little more and we took it from there. John (Sadler) told me to lie in the saddle and come with one late run. Same thing we always do with nice horses like her.”

TRAINER QUOTES

JOHN SADLER, ZAZU, WINNER: “She was second to that other mare (cq, Turbulent Descent) at Hollywood, in the Moccasin Nov.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, FLUKE, WINNER: “We had a perfect trip. I thought we’d be laying second, but it worked out better this way. This horse is better with a target. Sometimes when he gets to the lead too early he throws his ears up and loses focus. He was just perfect today.”

PATRICK VALENZUELA, PROUDINSKY, SECOND: “He ran a great race. I didn’t want to be on the lead, but that’s where I ended up. He was a little fresh today. He kicked when I asked him, but he just couldn’t outrun his stable mate.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, TWIRLING CANDY, WINNER: “Mike (Smith) tried to send his horse to the lead and get a clean trip early. It was tough to get my horse to relax for a little bit. Going to the half-mile pole he relaxed really nice for me, which is what I wanted, and I just followed the horse on the lead. He’s a good horse. I followed the horse on the lead, and my horse just did unbelievable. My horse just took me there, and I let him do what he wants to do.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, TWEEBSTER, SECOND: “No excuses. He ran really well. I was in perfect position.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, SWITCH, WINNER: “I didn’t think it would set up that easy. She’s a nice horse and she’s improving more and more everyday. John (Sadler) told me to stay close to the pace, and those were the only instructions he gave me. She’s just a really nice horse.”

TRAINER QUOTES

JOHN SADLER, SWITCH, WINNER: “These are the hardest ones to win, when you’re the heavy favorite. I thought we’d have a chance to be leader of the division this year, with Zenyatta retiring.

JOCKEY QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, AMAZOMBIE, WINNER: “Some horses, certain riders get along with. I know this horse really well. He’s one of those horses, that it doesn’t matter if he’s on the turf or dirt. The rail was something new today. I probably could’ve stayed down there and followed Cost of Freedom, but I knew the closers would be coming and we made them fan out a little bit, which helped. Bill Spawr’s done a great job with this horse.”

JOE TALAMO, COST OF FREEDOM, THIRD: “He ran a good race, it’s just Russell (Baze) ran with me so hard.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, CARACORTADO, WINNER: “He’s a very nice horse, and Mike (Machowsky) has done such a good job with him. He’s a freak on turf and has such a tremendous turn of foot. I really appreciate the opportunity; they did a heck of a job. Mike’s been working with him on the turf and I have been working him every time. He just explodes that last eighth. I think one of his workouts, he came home in ten and four and I didn’t even ask him the last eighth.

JOCKEY QUOTES

VICTOR ESPINOZA, EVENING JEWEL, WINNER: “She worked very nice in her last work (Jan. 19, six furlongs in 1:12.80). I knew she was going to run big today. I had a tremendous trip. There was plenty of speed in the race and she settled down nice and we saved ground around the first turn. There were quite a few horses in front of me down the backside, but I decided to just stay inside and try to get lucky. Midway around the turn, the horses in front of me got tired and drifted off the rail and I was able to cut the corner there at the quarter pole.
