JOCKEY QUOTES

EDWIN MALDONADO, IZZY RULES, WINNER: “This win feels great, and it’s a dream come true. I was hoping to win a stakes race here at Santa Anita, and I finally did. This filly is so nice going and is just easy to ride. My main concern during the race was to try and get to the quarter pole alone because I knew she would do the rest of the work for me.”

TRAINER QUOTES

MIGUEL CARRANZA, ASSISTANT TO JEFF BONDE, IZZY RULES, WINNER: “Edwin knows how to ride her. He knows her well.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, MR GRUFF, WINNER: “I was a little too quick with this horse last time and he got tired. He was more relaxed today. I got just a little bit of pressure on the outside and inside, but he handled it
very well. He’s such a nice horse, and I think he can do anything.”

TRAINER QUOTES

RON ELLIS, MR GRUFF, WINNER: “This horse just loves running down the hill. He also ran well at
Hollywood Park on the flat, he’s one for one over there. He’s just a classy horse and I’ve got to love

MARTIN GARCIA, EDEN’S MOON, WINNER: “She’s a really good filly. Even though they put pressure on her right out of the gate, she relaxed for me. The seven (Reneesgotzip, with Corey Nakatani) pressed me real hard going to the far turn and she bumped my filly’s hind end which turned her a little sideways and she switched leads.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, WILLYCONKER, WINNER: “The race set up perfect for me today. I just tried to lay in behind the speed, save ground and make one run with him. He tried hard today to beat Mr. Commons and ran a really good race today. I was very happy to turn the tables on Mr. Commons today; my horse gave everything he had. I just tried to run my race and see how far I could go.”

MIKE SMITH, MR. COMMONS, SECOND: “He ran great. I had an eighth of a mile to get by

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOSE LEZCANO, RON THE GREEK, WINNER: “I didn’t want to be on the inside so I had to use him the whole way to make him keep going. At the half-mile pole I had a lot of horse, but I had to keep asking my horse. My horse is like a bicycle, you keep asking and he will keep running. The last three races he has been improving. His last race in Florida he was racing a shorter distance and the other horse opened up early and I couldn’t catch him. He was really coming the last three-sixteenths, but the other horse opened up too early”

ESWAN FLORES, TONES, WINNER: “This has been a dream of mine since I was eight years old. I wanted to be here so much I didn’t even care if I was a galloper; I just wanted to be around horses. Now I’m here winning races, and winning a stakes race is the best feeling ever. I saw the wire and I saw my nose in front of another horse, but it was a tight race. I was really scared and couldn’t wait for the wire to get there.”

MARTIN GARCIA, THE FACTOR, WINNER: “My horse was the only speed today, so nobody wanted to let him go on the lead by himself. My horse was really comfortable on the backstretch and that’s the way he wants to run. He’s been learning more and more every time he runs and he’s improving so much. He’s just going to get better and better.”
When asked about his thoughts on the inquiry that took place:
“I was a lane in front of Victor (Espinoza’s) horse. I came in a little today, but there was nobody there and I’m not sure why there was an inquiry.”

COREY NAKATANI, CITY TO CITY, WINNER: “We were hoping that there would be some legitimate pace in the race, and in a mile race there always is. This filly was doing fabulous coming into the race. I couldn’t have been in a better spot and the way the race developed was perfect. I felt I won the race, but Brice’s (Blanc) horse (Up In Time) was flying at me and I wasn’t sure if we would hold on. When that filly came to her she actually started to run again. I just made sure I had enough horse to get to the position I wanted to be in and she ran a big race.”

MARTIN GARCIA, DRILL, WINNER: “I don’t know what made the difference today, I guess he just wanted to run. He’s a really good horse so I don’t know what happened in his last races, but he put everything together today. The finish was close but I was confident I got the win.”
