JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, GERVINHO, WINNER: “At the three-eighths pole my horse slipped really bad. When he was coming he slipped right away so I tried to get a hold of my horse, that’s why I lost a couple lengths. Once I saw the stretch I pulled him up and he came running. He showed me a big kick.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, DEN’S LEGACY, SECOND: “I thought he had done enough to win the race, but Carla’s (Gaines) horse ended up making that late run and finished up really well. But our horse did everything a horse is supposed to. He did stuff that two-year-olds really don’t do. He was very responsive to everything I asked him to do, even going through the hole. There was a tight hole when I turned for home and he didn’t even think about it, he just ran right through it. He finished up well, he just got beat today.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, FLASHY WAYS, WINNER: “We just had a perfect trip. Three of them went out there in a speed duel and we just sat behind. Then turning for home I turned her out and had a lot of horse. She’s bred up and down for the turf on her dam’s side. Richard (Baltas) has done a great job with her. She was fit and ready to go today. Again, I just had a perfect trip with a good horse underneath.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, WISHING GATE, SECOND: “I had a really good trip but I had to wait a little bit at the quarter pole. Joe (Talamo) moved out and cut me a little close but after I turned for home I had all the time in the world to go get the leader. That other filly just ran really good today. My filly is coming around; she’s just learning what it’s about. These are young babies and it’s all a learning process for them. Hopefully she’ll learn from it and move forward.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MIKE SMITH, RUMOR, WINNER: “She ran dynamite. Richard (Mandella) just said to let her run her race. He wanted me to let her break and see what she decides, then go from there. She broke really kind and I saw the favorite was going to ease back so I went ahead and moved her up so I could keep the favorite inside of me. It all worked out great. I’ve seen Garrett (Gomez) win some good ones on her. She always comes back and fights, so I knew she would at least give me something to fight with, and she did.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, WINDING WAY, FOURTH: “She just didn’t fire today.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, OBVIOUSLY, WINNER: “This is actually the best he has relaxed. He’s definitely got the highest cruising speed of any horse I’ve ever been on. I still can’t get over that he went the half (mile) in 45 and change. That cruising speed of his is unbelievable. Pulling up, I had to get the outrider to grab me; he’s just full of run. I’m excited for the Breeders’ Cup with him. I was very confident with my horse today. Mike’s (Mitchell) done a great job keeping him fresh after his races. Going a mile, he’s just unbelievable. I feel like I’m family when it comes to Mike (Mitchell). He’s been instrumental to my career and taking me to the next level. He’s always put me on great horses like this and I really appreciate that.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

PATRICK VALENZUELA, MERIT MAN, WINNER: “I’m feeling a little sore (he missed the last few racing days with knee issues), but feel good. Bob Hess has a very nice horse here. He ran a very good race at Del Mar. He kind of blew himself up a little bit when he saw a photographer up past the wire. He looked at him and kind of pulled himself up a little bit but he’s a very nice horse. Two turns, let’s do it.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, COIL, WINNER: “It’s a great opportunity to get this horse back and I did my job.”

DAVID FLORES, CAPITAL ACCOUNT, SECOND: “I always like the extra sixteenth for him but I was trying my best to get this guy working early. For some reason I couldn’t save ground on the last turn, but I was attacking the horse I needed to, Coil. He was the horse to beat. I tried to stay as close as I possibly could to him but he got away a little bit at the top of the stretch. My horse showed nice talent at the end. It was very close at the end but I knew it would have taken a couple more jumps to beat the winner. I have to give great credit to my horse because when I asked him to go he was responding. Maybe next time I’ll have to go a little bit earlier.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, SLIM SHADEY, WINNER: “Simon (Callaghan) wanted me to be laying close with him, if not, then just off the horse on the lead. We felt like there wasn’t a lot of pace in the race, and if he was willing to do so, lay second like I did with him in his last race at Del Mar. Today he was fresh and he really caught me unexpectedly. I never really expected him to be pulling me on the lead like that. I had trouble getting him to settle into a good stride.

JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, EXECUTIVEPRIVILEGE, WINNER: “She impressed me today. When I saw a lot of scratches in the race, especially the speed, I had no choice but to send her. She brought me to the lead easy and I was concerned a little bit, but after the first turn I knew I had so much horse. She was so relaxed. I think after this race she’ll be ready for the Breeders’ Cup. She’s going to be tough.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, POWER BROKER, WINNER: “This horse has turned out really good. I’m surprised with the way he ran today, he was amazing. It was the first time he ran on this track at this distance and it looked like he loved this track. It’s important to be on the lead right now, and it was easy to find early position right away.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, LOVE AND PRIDE, WINNER: “The instructions were to let her break and
not fight her, just let her be happy. That’s exactly how the race turned out. I let her break, sat, then when it was time to go she just finished the job. I’m very lucky to ride this beautiful horse and I will pray to see if I can stay with her.”
