JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, RED SUN, WINNER: “I had to be on the lead with my horse. I knew there was going to be a little speed on the outside so I had to use a little bit of my horse in the beginning, but after that I was able to relax. When I saw the favorite (Ryehill Dreamer) was coming next to me I tried to save as much ground as I could and let my horse go with him. This horse always runs well with me.”

JOE TALAMO, RYEHILL DREAMER, 11-10 FAVORITE, SECOND: “That’s about as good as he could have run.

JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, LADY TEN, WINNER: “This filly is very nice to ride, and easy to ride, too. She likes to be close to the lead so I was a little worried in the beginning. She broke good from the gate but I knew there would be a lot of speed so I tried to make sure to give her help from the gate so she could find a position in the race.

“When I got my position at the first turn I just tried to hold her a little bit then let her run when we hit the top of the stretch. She was easy to ride and I think you can do anything you want with this filly.

JOCKEY QUOTES

COREY NAKATANI, COMMA TO THE TOP, WINNER: “The plan was to go to the lead. He’s got speed and that’s what he likes best. I was a little concerned about his fitness today at this distance, but he was ready.”

Today is Nakatani’s 42nd birthday. Asked about a celebration, he said: “When you’re 42, it’s just another day.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, TRES BORRACHOS, SECOND: “The race went a little slower than I was hoping for. The idea today was not really to send him, just to try and let him get up on his feet and find him a place.

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, BROKEN DREAMS, WINNER: “I had some concerns (about Kindle’s big lead). The simple fact is, coming to the dirt, instead of picking her (Kindle) up, she (Kindle) actually moved away from me another length or so and I was like, Oh, man. I know my filly is going to stay going 6 ½ and I know she’s going to keep coming.

“But by the time we hit inside the eighth pole, she (Kindle) wasn’t coming back still. I had maybe made up a little bit of ground on her, but not much, not enough to get there . . .

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, MONUMENT, WINNER: “He was back and forth today. I think he looked too much at the people in the grandstands. I had a lot of horse, that’s why he had time to look around. This was the first time he’s run at a distance, and it looks like he likes it.”

JOEL ROSARIO, BALLARD RULER, SECOND: “It was a good race. It was his first time (going) long and he showed that could run.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOEL ROSARIO, TIZ FLIRTATIOUS, WINNER: “She’s a pretty nice filly. I’ve rode her before and she acted really good last time I rode her. She was still rank in her last race, maybe that’s why she got tired. Today she was really relaxed and she covered a lot of ground when I asked her to run. She looked good.”

JOCKEY QUOTES

GARRETT GOMEZ, MAUI MARK, WINNER: “It wasn’t the smoothest of trips. I squeezed him early just to help him get on his feet and he kind of struggled, so then I just tried to find a rhythm for him and a spot that he was traveling well in. I got to the turn, and he tried to spread the turn a little bit, so I got him back inside. Once I got him lined up and started focusing on making some kind of run, I pointed him where I wanted to go and his confidence started growing because he knew he was getting out from behind the dirt.

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, BELLA VIAGGIA, WINNER: “Before she actually ran I worked her about seven or eight times so I was very familiar with her. We just had a great trip. Mike (Puype) had her ready to go today. The rail opened up good and we just shot on through.”

KEVIN KRIGGER, MISDEALORNODEAL, SECOND: “I had a good trip. I kind of had the perfect trip. I started about three wide, perfect outside the front runners. When I asked her to run, she kept her stride. The one horse (Bella Viaggia) got her on the inside and it worked out good for him (Talamo). We ran our race.

JOCKEY QUOTES

TYLER BAZE, LUCKY PRIMO, WINNER: “Lucky Primo, I love that name. At this stage of my career I’m definitely appreciating things more, especially the shots everybody’s giving me right now. I’ve got a whole lot of live horses that people have been putting me on and it’s just a blessing.”

BRICE BLANC, GOT EVEN, SECOND: “I had a beautiful trip. It worked out great, just like Peter (Miller) and I planned it in the paddock. Peter was a little worried and wasn’t sure he could go the distance, but he relaxed really nicely and finished up strong.

JOCKEY QUOTES

RAFAEL BEJARANO, TILDE, WINNER: “My horse broke so beautiful from the gate and I just wanted to make sure I put her in the right spot. When I found my position, I just tried to get her comfortable and not rush her too much. When I saw somebody moving from the inside I tried to keep my position and not get pushed out. As soon as I came to the stretch I let her go and she came running. She was flying in the end. This is a good filly. She’s getting better.
