MIKE SMITH, MIZDIRECTION, WINNER: “If anything good came out of it, she rated really well (Referring to a bumping incident at the break). I don’t know if it was because of that or she was just going to rate well. She’s a much more mature horse this year. She’s stronger, she’s bigger, and she’ll definitely get a mile. I thought if a horse was going to come to her she would have dug back in so now at least we have options. There’s not too many six or six and a halves but we can kind of pick our spots.

DAVID FLORES, SHAKIN IT UP, WINNER: (In response to being back on this horse) “It reminds me of the good ol’ days. It brings me back to a time when I was riding these kind of horses, and it’s good to be back on a horse like this.”

(This was almost a blanket finish, how was it working your way through that traffic?) “He put me in a spot I wasn’t expecting. He put me in the race right away, so I just had to be patient and wait for the pocket to open, and that’s pretty much what happened.

GARY STEVENS, GREAT HOT, WINNER: “At the three-eighths pole I let her out a notch and it wasn’t full tilt yet, but it was enough to get their attention. When we turned into the stretch she had enough still to hold the other filly off.”

(Did you like the way you got her to relax going into the first turn?)

“It was so sweet. I moved her out about three wide and she just shut it down and was listening to my commands all the way around.

GARY STEVENS, PURIM’S DANCER, WINNER: (In response to Stevens seeing her race last time out with Garrett Gomez up and if he thought she had a good late kick) “Yeah, I went back and watched her race from the other day when Garrett rode her and tried to draw up the same trip, and we got it. When we crossed the dirt, Garrett’s filly (Nechez Dawn) kind of scooted out and my filly has a quick turn of foot though, and it was over with in a matter of strides.”

(I heard you say to Tom Proctor (trainer) you think she can go further) “She will.

GARY STEVENS, SLIM SHADEY, WINNER: “It was a very comfortable pace. I was just telling Christina (Olivares for HRTV) that when we came under the wire the first time if they left me alone mid-way down the backside, the race was over with; he was very happy. When I worked him the other morning it seemed like the horse was happy. I just wanted to stay out of his way and let him be his own man, and that’s exactly what he is. He wants to be his own man and have you stay out of his way.

MIKE SMITH, GAME ON DUDE, WINNER: “You know I got pressured, even more so than if it was a full field, believe it or not. In these short fields people make you do things because it’s more of a match race. He has a high, high cruising speed and you just let him get into his rhythm whether that’s up front or off the lead. I let him do his thing today and he ran brilliant to be honest. He stood up over on the turn, took one breath and turned around like it was nothing.

JULIEN LEPAROUX, FLASHBACK, WINNER: “I think he’s still a little green, it was an easy race, we won easy, and this is a nice horse. If he keeps improving, I think he has a bright future.”

(This is Flashback’s first time going long; how was he switching leads?)

“He was great changing leads, even on the backside he switched to his right lead right away. I had no problem with that.”

(Can you compare Flashback to Union Rags at all?)

“Not yet. I think he will improve off this race, and I can’t wait to ride him next time out.

JOE TALAMO, GUILT TRIP, WINNER: “It really set up great for him. The extra sixteenth (of a mile from the San Fernando) really helped. I think the mile and a quarter (of the Santa Anita Handicap on March 2) he’ll love even more.

“He’s a professional. I just had to point him in the right direction today. Bob (Baffert) did a great job and I’m happy to have the opportunity for Mr. and Mrs. West. It’s all good.”

JULIEN LEPAROUX, STEPHANOATSEE, SECOND: “It was a good trip for us. There wasn’t any pace for us.

JOE TALAMO, SUGGESTIVE BOY, WINNER: “He’s a very nice horse, and we really had a perfect trip. Everything set up great for us. They were flying up there. I was a little worried before the race, being in the 13 hole. Not too many horses win from out there, but he’s such a classy horse to get over and save some ground. Mr. McAnally has done a great job with him. He hasn’t run since the Breeders’ Cup, and he’s brought him along just great.

RAFAEL BEJARANO, FIFTYSHADESOFHAY, WINNER: “I had to move a little early today. The pace was fast but the way the track played today was really fast. I was really comfortable with my horse, and when I saw the other horse (Escape Act) was done at the three-eighths pole I let my horse go and open up three or four lengths in the stretch because I knew they weren’t going to catch me.”

JOE TALAMO, SCARLET STRIKE, 3-2 FAVORITE, THIRD: “We had a pretty good trip today. The track is pretty fast.
