ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 22, 2009) – A pair of Grade I, $300,000 stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs, the traditional opening day Malibu plus the La Brea for fillies, will mark the commencement of Santa Anita’s 75th anniversary season Saturday with an array of additional attractions to include the parading of recently retired champion mare Zenyatta into the winner’s circle for a special ceremony. First post for the bustling 10-race program, four of them stakes races, has been advanced to 11:30 a.m.

Santa Anita’s traditional wall calendar, popularly associated with each opening day and this year celebrating the track’s diamond anniversary, will be given away free of charge with each paid admission. A striking color poster of the undefeated Zenyatta, sponsored by HRTV and including photos of each of her 14 triumphs, also will be given away in conjunction with the ceremony featuring her connections. Moreover, a life-sized bronze statue of the legendary Hall of Fame gelding John Henry will be unveiled in the Paddock Gardens.

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 16, 2009) – Mike Mitchell, aiming to underscore a second successive Santa Anita training title on the meet’s closing day, will send out defending champion Big Booster and stablemate Church Service in Sunday’s 70th running of the historic San Juan Capistrano Handicap while seeking his third straight victory in the Grade II, $200,000 marathon at 1 ¾ miles on turf.

April 15, 2009

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 15, 2009) – Foxysox has chased Black Mamba three times in graded stakes races with the exception being a nose separation in last year’s Santa Barbara Handicap, a reversal that Black Mamba will attempt to rectify Saturday in Santa Anita’s 61st running of the Grade II, $200,000 competition for fillies and mares at
1 ¼ miles on turf.

April 9, 2009

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 8, 2009) – British-bred Battle of Hastings, upset winner of the Grade III Baldwin Stakes on March 1 when, according to jockey Tyler Baze, “the light bulb went on,” will attempt to further illuminate his career prospects on Saturday in Santa Anita’s $100,000 La Puente Stakes for 3-year-olds at one mile on turf.

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 9, 2009) – Garrett Gomez, the nation’s leading jockey in purse earnings the last three years and America’s Eclipse Award winner the last two, will employ a final opportunity on Sunday to equal a Santa Anita record for most stakes victories by a jockey in a single season, which is 19.

Gomez, who left Santa Anita to ride full-time at the Keeneland meeting that opened on April 3, returns to handle the enigmatic 4-year-old Irish-bred filly Tuscan Evening in the Grade III, $100,000 Las Cienegas Handicap for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs on turf.

April 2, 2009

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 2, 2009) – High Resolve clearly will be the one to catch Sunday among seven fillies and mares entered in Santa Anita’s 57th running of the Grade III, $100,000 Las Flores Handicap at 6 ½ furlongs, as evidenced by the fact trainer Greg Gilchrist’s gray filly has been overhauled but three times in a 10-race career.

But Foxy Danseur, who ran down the Northern California-based speedster in Oak Tree’s $110,000 Cascapedia Stakes last October at Santa Anita, is in the lineup, and she may be accorded favoritism.
