ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 22, 2009) – A pair of Grade I, $300,000 stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs, the traditional opening day Malibu plus the La Brea for fillies, will mark the commencement of Santa Anita’s 75th anniversary season Saturday with an array of additional attractions to include the parading of recently retired champion mare Zenyatta into the winner’s circle for a special ceremony. First post for the bustling 10-race program, four of them stakes races, has been advanced to 11:30 a.m.
Santa Anita’s traditional wall calendar, popularly associated with each opening day and this year celebrating the track’s diamond anniversary, will be given away free of charge with each paid admission. A striking color poster of the undefeated Zenyatta, sponsored by HRTV and including photos of each of her 14 triumphs, also will be given away in conjunction with the ceremony featuring her connections. Moreover, a life-sized bronze statue of the legendary Hall of Fame gelding John Henry will be unveiled in the Paddock Gardens.
