MULTIPLE STORYLINES IN SANTA ANITA HANDICAP ON MARCH 2

The Santa Anita Handicap, a race already steeped in history, could enhance its luster when it is run this year on March 2.

If Ron the Greek faces Game On Dude as anticipated, it would mark the first time in the race’s 76 runnings that two previous Big ’Cap winners meet in the classic.

McANALLY, INTERACTION HEALTHY FOR SAN MARCOS STAKES

The good news for Ron McAnally these days is, his horses are in better shape than he is. But the 80-year-old Hall of Fame trainer is soldiering on anyway.

McAnally registered his first winner of the meet last Friday when Special Charm, owned and bred by his wife, Debbie, posted a three-quarter length win in the fifth race.

HEALTHY AND IMPRESSIVE FLASHBACK: WHITHER THOU GOEST?

While anyone was free to speculate on Flashback’s next race, Bob Baffert was tight- lipped on the issue Sunday morning, saying for the record only that the impressive 6 ¼-length winner of Saturday’s Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes came out of the race in good shape and that he had “no game plan” at the moment.

“I didn’t even sleep on it,” Baffert said on a summer-like Super Bowl morning.

With 10 wins from 22 starts, the durable 6-year-old gelding has won more than 45 percent of his races and is a prohibitive 1-5 morning line favorite to add No.

Bet on this: Little Jerry will be the longest shot in Saturday’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes, but it makes no never mind to Richard Baltas.
