SANTA ANITA BASEBALL CAP FREE TO FIRST 15,000 FANS ON SATURDAY, SEPT. 29, CAP MADE FAMOUS BY KENTUCKY DERBY-WINNING TRAINER DOUG O’NEILL
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2012)—Santa Anita’s 2012 Autumn Meet will hit full stride on Saturday, Sept. 29, as the first 15,000 fans on-track will receive a free replica of the Santa Anita baseball cap made famous earlier this year by Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Doug O’Neill, who will also participate in an autograph session from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the East Paddock Gardens.
In addition to the Santa Anita cap (a $25 retail value) fans will be treated to five Grade I Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” stakes, a Food Truck Festival, a life-sized statue unveiling of the great Zenyatta and a $400,000 guaranteed Late Pick 4.
O’Neill, who won the Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes and the Grade I Santa Anita Derby with Paul and Zillah Reddam’s I’ll Have Another en route to victories in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, wore a monogrammed Santa Anita cap throughout the Triple Crown run that is an exact duplicate of the one to be given away on Saturday.
“This is a beautiful cap and our fans are going to love it,” said Santa Anita CEO Mark Verge. “This is the same cap that Doug wore on both Kentucky Derby Day and Preakness Day and it’s going to be fun re-living some of the excitement that team I’ll Have Another helped to create throughout the racing world. This hat helped to generate some great exposure for Santa Anita and it’s going to be fun looking out on a sea of them here on the first Saturday.
“We’re hoping to have a great day and we’ll have plenty of world-class racing. With five Grade I stakes and so many horses prepping for the Breeders’ Cup here on Nov. 2 and 3, it’s going to be incredible. There should be some great betting opportunities and we expect that a lot of people will be taking a shot at the Late Pick 4.”
First post time on Saturday is 1 p.m. and admission gates will open at 11 a.m.
