OPENING DAY CROWD OF 44,579 VIEWS PARADE OF PRICES; SANTA ANITA HAS PICK SIX CARRYOVER OF $148,184, TOTAL POOL ON THURSDAY COULD EXCEED $750,000

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 26, 2011)—A rollicking opening day crowd of 44,579 was rendered silent following the afternoon’s fourth race, as 80-1 longshot maiden Kessabtsi blew out the tote board, returning $162.80, thus guaranteeing a high likelihood of an eventual Pick Six carryover of $148,184 into Thursday. It is expected Thursday’s total pool will exceed $750,000.

Kessabtsi, an 0-15 California-bred son of Unusual Heat who was facing a starter allowance field of 10 winners, was ridden by Agapito Delgadillo for trainer Javier Sierra and owners Sierra Stables, Inc. or Zerimar.

The carryover was all but assured in race five, as American Blend and Joel Rosario reported home on top and paid $23.00 to win.

The other notable upset in the Pick Six sequence came in race seven, as Garrett Gomez guided Got Even to victory in the $100,000 California Breeders Champion Stakes for colts and geldings and paid $27.20 to win.

Thursday’s Pick Six will cover races three through eight and with 57 horses scheduled to compete, average field size measures 9.5 horses per race.

Santa Anita will embark upon a special five-day week of racing beginning Thursday through Monday, Jan. 2. First post time on Thursday is 1 p.m.
