ARCADIA, Calif. (March 24, 2010) – Four-year-old gelding Bolinas provided Santa Anita’s leading trainer John Sadler with his 32nd victory of the season Wednesday when scoring a wire-to-wire win under jockey Tyler Baze as the 13-10 favorite in the day’s $28,080 starter allowance feature at one mile on turf.

The result gave Sadler, who is seeking a second successive training title at the winter/spring meet, a six victory lead over Bob Baffert with 19 days remaining in the meet.

After racing somewhat erratically when challenged at the head of the stretch, Bolinas was straightened away by Baze to score by a comfortable length over fast-closing Devil On the Roof while covering the distance in 1:34.91.

It was the second win in three races for Jack Liebau Jr. and Lloyd DeBruycker’s homebred son of Benchmark who missed by a nose in his second start.

Ridden by Mike Smith, Devil On the Roof rallied from last to gain the place in the field of eight. Belongs to Gotham, with Joel Rosario aboard, finished another 1 ½ lengths back in the third.

Bolinas paid $4.60, $2.80 and $2.20. The mutuels on Devil On the Roof were $4.40 and $3.60. Belongs to Gotham paid $2.60 to show.

The winning purse of $17,280 raised the earnings of the California-bred winner to $31,080.

Racing continues on Thursday at Santa Anita with an eight-race program. First post is at 1 p.m.
