MOBILIZED MOWS DOWN TOTAL BULL AS BEJARANO TRIPLES
ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2010) – With Rafael Bejarano gaining his third win of the afternoon, Mobilized mowed down 11-10 favorite Total Bull in the final strides of Friday’s $56,984 allowance feature at Santa Anita while running seven furlongs in 1:21.73.
The three-bagger on the meet’s 28th day gave leading rider Bejarano 36 victories and a nine-win lead over Victor Espinoza.
Total Bull seemed to have a commanding advantage turning into the stretch after putting away early pace-setters Tactful and Uncle Jeep in the field of nine, but just failed to last under jockey Garrett Gomez. The margin of victory was a neck. E Z’s Gentleman, with Joel Rosario aboard, ran on for third, another half-length back.
The winner, trained by Gary Mandella for Robert E. Reseigne, was coming off three straight setbacks on turf before returning to Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface. “Getting back to the Pro-Ride was the key,” said Mandella. “He’s a decent turf horse, but he’s best on Pro-Ride.”
The 4-year-old homebred son of Soul of the Matter had scored his first two wins over synthetic surfaces including his debut on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride footing in September of 2008.
Mobilized’s third career victory in eight starts on Friday rewarded backers with payoffs of $9.60, $3.20 and $2.80. Total Bull returned $2.80 and $2.80 while E Z’s Gentleman paid $6.40 to show.
Mobilized earned $35,880 to increase his career winnings to $115,136.
Santa Anita offers five stakes races on Saturday’s ten-race program including the Grade I Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, the Grade II Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds, and the Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-olds. First post is at 12:30 p.m.
