ARCADIA, Calif. (March 26, 2009) – Fiery Trippi, a 5-year-old gelding with but a single victory in 13 previous starts, proved best Thursday in Santa Anita’s $52,800 Rising Market Purse with a 1 ¾ length victory over favored Cause in the mile-and-one-eighth first-level allowance event.

With Mike Smith aboard, Fiery Trippi tracked early leader Saint Paul much of the distance before taking over at the head of the lane and completing his journey in 1:48.86 on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface.

Cause, who had competed in the Santa Anita Handicap in his previous start, finished 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Rathor for the place while ridden by Martin Garcia in the field of seven.

Third and second in his two prior races, Fiery Trippi paid $9.80, $4.80 and $3.20. Cause, who closed at odds of 3-1, returned $4.20 and $2.80. Rathor, with Garrett Gomez in the saddle, paid $3 to show.

A Florida-bred son of Trippi who is trained and co-owned by Bruce Headley, Fiery Trippi earned a winning purse of $31,200. His career earnings were inflated to $120,720 from a 2-2-4 record in 14 races for Headley and partner Irwin Molasky.

Santa Anita offers free admission when racing continues on Friday along with free box seats on a first-come, first-served basis. Hot dogs, sodas, beer, popcorn and coffee are priced at $1 on Fridays. First post for the eight-race card is at 1 p.m.
