(April 3, 2009) – Running around two turns for the first time in his sixth career start, 7-1 longshot Aggie Engineer and jockey Alex Solis ran off with Friday’s $56,800 optional claiming allowance feature to defeat Aitcho by 1 ¼ lengths while negotiating one mile over Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface in 1:36.44

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 2, 2009) – In making not only making her first start in the United States but her first over a synthetic surface, Anabaa’s Creation, an Irish-bred import from France, demonstrated her class Thursday with a decisive victory in Santa Anita’s $62,576 allowance feature for fillies and mares at one mile.

With jockey Tyler Baze gaining his third win of the afternoon, Anabaa’s Creation was rated behind the two early leaders, took control while racing wide around the final turn, and drew off to a 2 ¾-length triumph over fast-closing, but non-threatening Hot n’ Dusty.

ARCADIA, Calif., (April 1, 2009) – Prussian, making his West Coast debut, mowed down his competition Wednesday in Santa Anita’s $56,508 Midnight Rambler Purse to give trainer Mike Mitchell his third consecutive victory and a one-win lead over John Sadler in the meet’s trainers’ race with three weeks remaining.

With Rafael Bejarano aboard, Prussian closed swiftly to defeat Headache by 1 ¼ lengths in the optional claiming event contested at 6 ½ furlongs over the track’s downhill turf course. The winning time was 1:12.26.

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 1, 2009)—Long-time California based trainer Richard Matlow succumbed to the effects of Amytrophic Lateral Schlerosis (ALS) late Monday at his home in Monrovia at the age of 66. Best known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, after the Hall of Fame New York Yankee slugger who contracted the disease and retired as a result of it in 1939, ALS is a neurodegenerative disease which attacks the body’s central nervous system.

With all due respect to the other participants in next Saturday’s Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby, The Pamplemousse and Pioneerof the Nile have captured the fancy of racing fans. The two 3-year-olds are the heavyweights the racing world will focus on with keen intensity as they take what they hope will be their final step towards the Kentucky Derby on May 2.

Each horse has a similar record, but contrasting running styles. The Pamplemousse’s forte is speed.

ARCADIA, Calif. (March 29, 2009) – Carlsbad, an unbeaten sensation in Arizona’s “Cactus League,” transferred her form to the big leagues Saturday when running away from her opposition in Santa Anita’s 24th running of the Grade III, $100,000 Santa Paula Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 6 ½ furlongs.

After winning her first four starts at Turf Paradise in Phoenix by a combined 50 ¾ lengths, Carlsbad scored by 3 ¾ lengths over runner-up Ultra Blend while covering the distance in 1:14.65, just four-hundredths of a second off the stakes record.

ARCADIA, Calif. (March 28, 2009) – A former leading trainer in the United States who returned late last year from a one-year suspension for a medication violation, Patrick Biancone on Saturday realized his second victory since his reinstatement when Stream Cat captured Santa Anita’s 53rd running of the Grade III, $100,000 Tokyo City Cup at 1 ½ miles.

ARCADIA, Calif. (March 27, 2009) – Zayat Stables’ Zensational, sizzling winner of a maiden sprint race for 3-year-olds, tried to carry his speed one mile Friday in a $51,896 optional claimer at Santa Anita with Kentucky a considered destination, but he came up decidedly short.

Quindici Man, a $12,000 yearling purchase sent off at odds of 15-1, reeled in the 1-5 favorite to score by 1 ½ lengths over Zensational, who had begun to shorten stride after opening up a 10-length lead on the backstretch.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 27, 2009)—In deference to its annual Santa Anita Derby 5K Walk and Run, Santa Anita Park and the city of Arcadia have announced that Baldwin Ave., from the 210 Freeway to Huntington Drive, will be closed to vehicular traffic from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on April 4.

Accordingly, Santa Anita’s Gate Eight, which adjoins the Westfield Shopping Mall on Baldwin Ave., will also be closed to vehicles during the same time period.

ARCADIA, Calif. (March 26, 2009) – Fiery Trippi, a 5-year-old gelding with but a single victory in 13 previous starts, proved best Thursday in Santa Anita’s $52,800 Rising Market Purse with a 1 ¾ length victory over favored Cause in the mile-and-one-eighth first-level allowance event.

With Mike Smith aboard, Fiery Trippi tracked early leader Saint Paul much of the distance before taking over at the head of the lane and completing his journey in 1:48.86 on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface.
